Serial shoplifting suspects arrested

Three suspects were arrested on Wednesday for a series of supermarket thefts in the Jurong East area, said a police statement.

The suspects, a 53-year-old man and two women aged 23 and 54, allegedly stole more than $1,500 worth of goods, including two cans of abalone, and an assortment of bird's nest, chicken essence and dried mushrooms.

Police said that on Jan 8, a report was made of a case of shop theft in a supermarket in Jurong East, where a can of abalone, worth $83.80, was stolen. The identities of the suspects were established after closed-circuit TV footage was viewed.

The three suspects were arrested at about 9pm on Wednesday in the vicinity of Teban Gardens, and several items, believed to have been stolen, were recovered from the suspects' house. The can of abalone stolen on Jan 8 was also recovered.

If convicted, they may face up to seven years' jail and a fine.
