SINGAPORE - Some 3,400 residents of Hong Kah North constituency in the Pioneer Generation, along with others aged 60 and up, will get help from a new $100,000 community fund which was launched on Saturday.

The Hong Kah North Pioneer Generation Fund, believed to be the first of its kind, will provide financial assistance and support programmes for the elderly. It was announced at an appreciation event attended by around 210 of these residents at the neighbourhood's community club.

Half the money has been donated by KKL Construction and the other half will be raised through the sale of 50,000 friendship bands which the seniors, students from Westwood Secondary School and other volunteers also began making on Saturday.

"In this way the fund will be truly one that is contributed by the community for the community," said Senior Minister of State for Health and Manpower Amy Khor, who is MP for Hong Kah North, at the event.

The first Pioneer Generation welcome packs for the constituency's residents were also distributed at the event. The packs include the Pioneer Generation Card, which provides access to special subsidies at healthcare providers.
