SINGAPORE - A new man will helm the Law Society in January, with current vice president Thio Shen Yi taking over the role from Mr Lok Vi Ming.

Mr Thio, 46, was elected in a meeting on Thursday evening. The senior counsel - an elite group of advocates - is a joint managing director at TSMP Law Corp. His areas of expertise include corporate and commercial litigation.

Going forward, Mr Thio said he hopes the society would lead lawyers in initiatives that will help the community, business and legal sectors.

"I also hope to work more closely with foreign lawyers and firms in Singapore to build a more integrated profession that is ready for the challenges and opportunities that Singapore as an economic and financial hub will face, in the coming years."

Mr Lok, also a senior counsel, will be the past immediate president of the society, a self-regulatory body for some 4,600 practising lawyers in Singapore. He has been its president for two years, and will step down on Dec 31.

Meanwhile, Mr Kelvin Wong and Mr Gregory Vijayendran have been elected as vice-presidents and Ms Kuah Boon Theng elected as treasurer.
