The police arrested an 18-year-old man and four secondary school students, aged between 14 and 18 for their suspected involvement in illegal betting and illegal bookmaking.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the 18-year-old and one of the students, aged 17, were involved as bookmakers by accepting bets through an illegal soccer betting website. The other three were involved in placing bets with illegal bookmakers.
Investigations are ongoing. Under the Betting Act, anyone who bets with a bookmaker can be fined up to $5,000, be jailed up to six months, or both. Anyone who acts as a bookmaker can be fined between $20,000 and $200,000, and faces a maximum jail term of five years.
The police in a statement added that illegal gambling activities involving youths are a concern due to the dangers and addictive nature of gambling.
