Search for 14 missing crew members after barge capsizes in Singapore waters

SINGAPORE - Search teams were looking for 14 missing crew members on Wednesday night after their barge capsized in waters east of Singapore.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received a call at around 10am on Wednesday reporting that Bolivian-registered sand carrier Oceanline SC208 had capsized near Pedra Branca lighthouse - the easternmost point of the Republic.

There had been 15 crew members on board the vessel and one, a Chinese national, was reportedly rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

The remaining 14 crew - 13 Chinese nationals and one Maylaysian - were still unaccounted for as of 7pm.

Singapore is coordinating search and rescue operations.

The MPA deployed two vessels which joined others from the Republic of Singapore Navy, the Singapore Coast Guard and several Malaysian vessels.

The MPA was also conducting salvage operations. It issued navigational broadcasts to vessels in the vicinity to keep clear of the search and rescue area and to report any sightings of the missing crew.
