Mr Ee Peng Liang started the Community Chest and was known as Singapore's Father Of Charity for his leading role in building up the charity sector.

He was also active in the Boy Scouts movement in Singapore.

He was in the news this week in 1965 after being elected president of the Katong district of the Singapore Boy Scouts Association. He went on to become president of the national association.

In 1991, he was one of 14 Singaporeans formally admitted as a Baden-Powell Fellow by King Carl Gustaf of Sweden for his support of the scout movement.

Mr Ee died at age 81 in 1994. His eldest son, Lawrence, said in an article in The Straits Times then that a few hours before his father died, he was talking about helping the scout movement raise money for its new headquarters in Bishan.

The $4.5 million three-storey building was officially opened in 1998 and named after Mr Ee.
