Transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT have both applied to increase bus and train fares.

In a statement SBS Transit said it "continues to face significant cost pressures despite increased efforts to lower costs and increase productivity".

The Public Transport Council on Thursday confirmed that it has received applications for fare adjustments from both operators.

It is expected to make a decision on fare adjustments in the first quarter of next year.
