Sacking of Amy Cheong a "painful decision" for NTUC chief

It was one of the hardest decisions he had had to make as head of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), but it was one that had to be made.

NTUC's secretary-general Lim Swee Say said on Tuesday evening that the organisation had to fire Ms Amy Cheong after her racist remarks on Facebook went viral, as inclusivity - particularly among the different races - was integral to the organisation.

Ms Cheong was an assistant director with the congress until yesterday.

Mr Lim was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at Pei Chun Public School.

He added that while it was a painful decision for NTUC, he hoped that Singaporeans would spare a thought for the pain that Ms Cheong was also going through.
