Remembering Lee Kuan Yew: PMO releases new video of a nation in mourning

SINGAPORE - The Prime Minister's Office has shared a new video summarising some of the events of the week of national mourning from March 23 to 29.

As the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew lay in state in Parliament House, some 450,000 people waited in line for hours to pay their respects. Another 100,000 braved the rain and lined the streets to bid Mr Lee a final farewell on the day of the funeral on March 29.

The video begins with Mr Lee's eldest son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's eulogy being played over footage of the flag-covered casket being carried out of Parliament House.

"This has been a dark week for Singapore, the light that has guided us all these years has been extinguished. We've lost our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Who lived and breathed Singapore all his life" PM Lee says.

The sombre tune of Auld Lang Syne plays in the background as footage of the funeral procession shows people bidding farewell, flags held high and a nation mourning as one.

The video also features the sirens that played before the minute of silence to honour Mr Lee as well as footage of people across the country saying the national pledge and singing the national anthem together.

A snippet from the moving eulogy by Mr Lee's younger son, Hsien Yang, ends the video.

"We know our loss is your loss too. We are humbled that so many have come forward to demonstrate your affection for, respect of, and gratitude to my extraordinary father. The father we share with Singapore. Farewell papa."
