Stallholders at the Geylang Serai market donated food to needy residents and beneficiaries from various organisations for them to break fast.

At the iftar - breaking-of-fast session - held at the market yesterday, Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin joined some 250 underprivileged attendees, including those from the Tembusu Centre for Seniors.

He also gave out green packets containing cash - part of which were donated by the stallholders - to spread cheer during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

The organiser, Pasar Geylang Serai Merchants' Association, said that the green packets were worth $5,000 in total.

Mr Tan, an MP for Marine Parade GRC, said: "(The stallholders) pooled their money together, and the food (provided) is something that they cooked... It's a very meaningful way for the stallholders to give back to the community."
