About 2,500 congregants performing the first of special terawih prayers yesterday evening at the Al-Mukminin Mosque in Jurong East Street 21, marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to attend the prayers, which are conducted up to the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Ramadan is a time for worship, reading the Quran, purification of individual behaviour and doing charity. Muslims abstain from food and drink during the daylight hours for the entire month.
