Poly and university students get funding for community projects

Students in Institutes of Higher Learning are set for a cash boost by the National Youth Council for community projects and research.

The Council will pump in $1.9 million over two years to support the students, said Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong on Tuesday.

This initiative is to help sustain volunteerism among polytechnic and university students, so that they continue to be engaged in the community when they graduate.

Mr Wong added that this partnership can give young people "a sense of empowerment" to shape society and "to show them they have options and opportunities to make a difference".

Currently, six institutes have signed up for the partnership: Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University.
