Police investigating man who lodged false report to cover up for loss of work permit

A man lodged a false report to cover up for the loss of his work permit, the Police said on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old claimed that four unknown men armed with a knife robbed him around 8pm last Wednesday at Jalan Besar Stadium. They purportedly took off with his work permit and $300 in cash.

But police said the man made the statement to cover up for the loss of his work permit - he lost it after a drinking session at Serangoon Road.

Investigations against the man are ongoing. Anyone convicted of knowingly giving a public servant false information, or abetting it, can face up to a year in jail, a maximum fine of $5,000, or both.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner Keok Tong San said those who lodge a false police report "impede police responses to real crimes and emergencies".
