Before the first new hawker centre run by a social enterprise opens in 2015, a centre in Bedok has been quietly trying to set an example. Kampung@Simpang Bedok, run by Best of Asia - a social enterprise started by a group of Christian friends - has set out to help hawkers, youths and immigrants incubate their own stalls.

Rents average $3,200 monthly, but they offer flexible rental models to help those unable to afford it. Prices are low, and the centre also features arts and crafts, live music, a flea market and a beer garden.
