Pet shop apologises for rough handling of dog

SINGAPORE - A pet shop in Nex shopping mall apologised on Monday (Sept 11) following allegations that one of its staff members had abused a dog.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) also confirmed that it is investigating the case.

On Sunday (Sept 10), a customer, Jamie Thompson, posted a 10-second video clip on Facebook showing a dog being thrown into a cage by a person whose face could not be seen in the video.

The 16-year-old psychology student said that the incident took place last Thursday (Sept 7) and also furnished details of the abuse in her post. The dog does not belong to her.

Pick-A-Pet, in its apology on its Facebook page, said "the staff (member) has been reprimanded, counselled and has resigned voluntarily".

The pet shop also said it had taken the dog for a full health check, and posted a photo of a medical report from a veterinary clinic, which said the dog was "in good health without any physical or obvious behavioural signs of abuse".

Pick-A-Pet declined further comment, citing investigations from AVA.
