People's Association offers hour-long 'taster' courses for busy residents

The People's Association launched a series of hour-long courses on Saturday at its Community Day celebration at Bugis+ mall.

The lessons will be held on weekdays and offer activities such as scrapbooking, salad-making and paper quilling. They will be priced up to $10 although over-60s will have to pay a flat rate of just $3.

The Association's chief executive director Mr Ang Hak Seng said residents had told him they wanted "short and modular" courses that fit around their daily activities.

Currently, most PA courses run in the evenings at community clubs with sessions of up to three hours that go on for several months.

The new shorter courses will target retirees, homemakers, residents on shift work, and students on school holidays, and offer them a taster of the regular courses.

Demonstrations were held at Bugis+ mall. Ms Fiona Lee, 57, made a pomelo salad under the guidance of chef Forest Leong, wife of celebrity chef Sam Leong. The duo are the PA's celebrity trainers and conduct occasional cooking classes at community clubs.

"It helps to de-stress," said Ms Lee.

The Association will offer a 10 per cent discount on all its courses offered at community clubs and water activity centres until July 7.

It will conduct three more roadshows at Bukit Panjang Plaza on June 14 and 15, West Gate on July 5 and 6, and Bedok Mall on August 16 and 17.
