SINGAPORE - You can now pay hawkers using your mobile phone at a number of hawker centres in Singapore, but diners do not seem to have caught on.

Some hawkers now provide customers with the option of cashless payments using a mobile app - Liquid Pay. The app enables electronic payments using a QR code.

Users need to enter their credit card details to use the app.

Listed in the app are stalls from food centres in Tiong Bahru, Bukit Timah, Alexandra Village, Amoy Street, Pek Kio, Serangoon Garden and more.

More than 10 stalls at Tiong Bahru are equipped with the app, but the hawkers said that many customers still pay them in cash, Lianhe Wanbao reported on Sunday (Feb 19).

Many consumers did not know of the app or that it can be used there, the Chinese evening paper said.

Some hawkers also said that their clients were elderly and did not know how to use the app.

Besides hawker stalls, the app can be used at a number of cafes and restaurants, mainly in one-north.

Users of the app will also receive targeted discounts and promotions.

The mobile payment platform officially launched in Singapore last November.
