Orchid name marks Singapore navy's 50th anniversary

Mrs Lai Chiew Yen - the wife of Singapore's Chief of Navy, Rear-Admiral Lai Chung Han - placing a nameplate into a pot of orchids at the Botanic Gardens yesterday. The orchid-naming ceremony was held before an international gathering of navy wives. The orchid was dubbed Dendrobium Singapore Navy Golden Jubilee to mark the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Singapore Navy. The naval personnel department's director, Colonel Saw Shi Tat, received the birth certificate of the white orchid hybrid from Botanic Gardens group director Nigel Taylor (holding microphone).
