Not naming top PSLE scorers to emphasise holistic development: Heng

The decision to stop releasing the list of top Primary School Leaving Examination scorers is to emphasise holistic development and all-round excellence, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat.

Mr Heng was responding to questions from Potong Pasir Sitoh Yih Pin and Nominated MP R Dhinakaran on the decision that was made in November last year.

"Education is a long journey. The PSLE marks the conclusion of one stage of a child's learning journey and the beginning of another. It is important to help our students develop the disposition to embark on this long journey." said Mr Heng.

In line with this move, MP Intan Azura Mokhtar (Ang Mo Kio GRC) asked if the Education Ministry would consider not publishing aggregate scores required for admission into the various secondary schools.

Mr Heng said that the entry scores provide a guide to parents, but will look at the issue together with other issues relevant to the posting of secondary school students.
