SINGAPORE - Lost and alone after being sexually abused at her home last October, Valerie sought the company of someone who could understand her trauma.

"I didn't think it would happen to me. Going to the police felt like a daunting thing," said the 19-year-old student who kept quiet about her ordeal, even to her family.
