New non-profit group to promote culture of honour in Singapore

SINGAPORE - A new non-profit organisation has been formed to promote the culture of honour in Singapore, in conjunction with the nation's 50th anniversary next year.

Titled "Honour (Singapore)", the group is led by former head of civil service and group president of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation Lim Siong Guan. Other community advisors include Nominated Member of Parliament Laurence Lien and Dr Edwin Thumboo, Emeritus Professor at the National University of Singapore.

Mr Lim intends to launch a series of talks, conferences and events aimed at different society groups like families, schools and businesses to emphasise how honour is crucial to success in life.

"As much public discussion was taking place on how to celebrate Singapore's 50 years of independence next year, our thoughts turned to trying to understand what has made Singapore succeed over the years and what would help Singapore succeed in the years to come... Honour (Singapore) was thus born," said Mr Lim, speaking at the group's launch at Fullerton Hotel on Tuesday.

The event's guest-of-honour was Education Minister Heng Swee Keat.
