Mr Paul G. Peralta, dubbed the Father of Tourism, was tasked with boosting tourist arrivals to Singapore from Malaysia and Brunei this week in 1965.

The director of the private Singapore Tourist Association (STA) said it would work closely with tourist associations in Malaysia.

He started as a publicity and printing officer in the British Military Administration in 1945. He joined the STA in 1960, and helped start the Miss Tourism Singapura pageant in 1965 to choose attractive tourism ambassadors.

He left the STA in 1970 to join Hotel Royal-Ramada as director of sales, marketing and public relations, before retiring in 1973 at 68.

In 1976, he received an award from the Pacific Area Travel Association (Pata) for his many contributions to tourism.
