New design for Punggol mosque unveiled following design review

The findings of a six-month long review of mosques in Singapore climaxed on Saturday with the unveiling of preliminary designs for the upcoming mosque in Punggol - the first to incorporate recommendations from the review.

Held exactly where the future mosque would be built by 2015 - at the junction of Punggol Field and Punggol Place - the Punggol Mosque Design roadshow organised by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) signals a fresh start in the form and features future mosques will take in Singapore.

Speaking to reporters after the unveiling, guest of honour and minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Yaacob Ibrahim said the Punggol mosque would cater to the differing needs of the Muslim population today.

The Punggol mosque, roughly the size of 10 tennis courts, will have a three-block structure with an open concept and dedicated spaces for the elderly, a nursery room and lounge for women and multi-purpose rooms for weddings and other events.
