New Chief of Air Force Mervyn Tan takes command

SINGAPORE -The command of the Singapore Air Force was handed over to Brigadier-General (BG) Mervyn Tan Wei Ming on Monday (March 28).

Outgoing Chief of Air Force Major-General Hoo Cher Mou, 50, passed the air force command symbol to BG Tan, 44, at a change of command parade at Tengah Air Base on Monday evening.

BG Tan, joined the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in 1990. He has commanded the Air Defence and Operations Command and headed the Air Plans Department in the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).

Before taking over as RSAF chief, he was the director of military intelligence and Chief of Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I).

Maj-Gen Hoo, who joined SAF in 1984, has headed the air force since March 25, 2013.

Under Maj-Gen Hoo's leadership, the RSAF participated in various peace-time support operations and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, a report in January said.

These included the search and locate operations for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in 2014, as well as the aerial firefighting efforts in Indonesia last October.

The parade was witnessed by Chief of Defence Force Maj-Gen Perry Lim, the Ministry of Defence said in its press release.
