A sense of excitement and anticipation is in the air as the nation waits for the biggest show of the year to kick off after 5pm this evening.

Ticket-holders to the much sought-after parade have started streaming in to the malls near the Marina Bay floating platform.

Most are decked out in the national colours of red and white.

Nurse Charlotte Tan, 41, who will be watching the parade with her family and best friend, said she came early to get good seats.

"We just had our lunch and we're all prepared to brave the weather as we 'chope' our seats. We have suntan lotion, fans, umbrellas and bottled water," she said. "We are excited to celebrate the nation's birthday and enjoy the atmosphere."
