Veteran Singapore diplomat Chan Heng Chee will be taking over from Edmund Cheng Wai Wing as chairman of the National Arts Council (NAC) from Sept 1.

Singapore's Ambassador-at-Large, Professor Chan Heng Chee, will serve a two-year term as chairman, said the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) in a press release issued on Friday.

The council oversees matters of corporate and financial governance and advises the management of the NAC in the planning of major arts initiatives.

The outgoing Mr Cheng, the deputy chairman and deputy managing director of property company Wing Tai Holdings, has served 11 years on the council - three years as deputy chairman and eight years as chairman. He was also the chairman of the strategic review committee and the human resource committee.

Under his stewardship, the council launched new initiatives in traditional and literary arts as well as community arts. His term also saw Singaporean artists and arts companies supported in their development through assistance schemes under the NAC.

Ms Yeoh Chee Yan, permanent secretary of the MCCY, said: "Mr Cheng has been a tireless champion for the arts in Singapore and under his watch, the arts scene has flourished."
