A woman had to be freed by paramedics after she got herself trapped under a bench.

A passer-by spotted her wedged between the bench and the wall of a staircase at Jurong Spring Community Club on Tuesday.

At least three of the club's staff tried to free her before they called the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), said a club spokesman.

The woman, who is in her 60s, visits the club in Jurong West almost every day, added the spokesman. The SCDF received the call at around 6.10pm on Tuesday.

They had to saw off part of the bench in order to free her.

In a report by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao yesterday, a passer-by said the woman was pale but conscious. She was later taken to National University Hospital.

It also reported that she appeared to weigh around 120kg and had apparently fallen asleep on the metal bench, which had no backrest, before slipping underneath it. She was trapped for around 20 minutes.

A spokesman for the community club said the woman was not seen on its premises yesterday.
