SINGAPORE - More than 100,000 people lined the streets along the state funeral procession route on Sunday to bid farewell to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, according to the State Funeral Organising Committee.
Close to 2,000 police officers were deployed to ensure the smooth flow of the cortege and accompanying convoy from Parliament House to the University Cultural Centre (UCC), it said in a statement issued on Sunday night.
At the Funeral Service held at UCC, about 2,200 guests, including members of the late Mr Lee's family, the President of Singapore, Cabinet Ministers, the Judiciary, Members of Parliament, foreign leaders, and invited Singaporeans from all walks of life attended the State Funeral Service.
Foreign dignitaries who attended the service include Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Indonesia's President Joko Widodo. South Korea's President Park Geun-Hye, Malaysia's King Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk were also in attendance.
Over the past six days, a total of 1.2 million people visited the People's Association's 18 community tribute sites across the island. The sites closed at 6pm on Sunday after the Funeral Service. In addition, a total of 454,687 visitors attended the four-day Lying-in-State at Parliament House from March 25 to March 28.
