Mediation and counselling mandatory for parents undergoing divorce proceedings

Parents with at least one child below 14-years-old must attend mediation and/or counselling at Family Court from Monday.

This comes with an amendment change in the Women's Charter in 2011 that requires counselling and mediation for parties with at least one child under the age of 21 during divorce proceedings.

The Family Court's Child Focused Resolution Centre (CFRC) will help implement these requirements.

In 2012, 98 per cent of cases without agreed parenting issues in custody, care, control and access of children, among others reached an agreement after CFRC intervention.
