A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of another man, who is believed to be his father.
The 61-year-old victim was found dead in the living room of his Bishan Housing Board flat last Saturday night, after neighbours heard a loud quarrel. He was reportedly beaten to death.
According to Chinese evening newspaper Lianhe Wanbao, the man is believed to be the younger of the victim's two sons. If convicted of murder, he faces the death penalty.
Neighbours told The Straits Times that they heard a lot of noise coming from the fifth-floor unit at Block 152B, Bishan Street 11 shortly before police arrived to find the victim lying motionless. They said it was not the first time they had heard quarrels from the flat.
It is believed that the victim lived with his wife and two sons, the elder of whom is 31.
A neighbour who lives across from the unit said he often heard a lot of commotion coming from the flat where the family of four lived. The 68-year-old, who declined to give his name, said he does not know the family well but would greet the couple whenever they met and exchange pleasantries with them on festive occasions. He added that he had occasionally seen police officers visiting the flat.
Police said they were alerted to the incident at about 8.20pm on Saturday. The victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene at about 9pm.
When The Straits Times arrived at the scene, police had cordoned off the corridor on the fifth floor. Police officers were seen leaving the scene with evidence early yesterday morning. The body was taken away at 1.50am.
The Straits Times understands that there were no visible injuries on the victim.
According to Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News, blood stains and shattered glass were found in the unit. It also reported that the victim's wife and elder son were in the flat when the attack took place.
A neighbour, who lives on the fourth floor and wanted to be known only as Ms Yaya, 33, said: "It was normal to hear quarrelling upstairs in the last few days. It would happen during the evening and last for only a few minutes."
Another neighbour, who lives on the sixth floor, said the victim and his wife were a loving couple who were often seen together.
About 15 relatives, including the deceased's wife, were seen at the void deck of the block at about 1am. She later broke down as relatives hugged her.
The incident happened at the Golden Jasmine studio apartments - a housing project designed for the elderly and consisting of 176 units.
Yesterday afternoon, more than a dozen relatives gathered at the flat. The family declined to comment at length, saying they were still trying to cope with the loss.
A relative, who did not give her name, said the victim's wife is "still sad and very emotional". She added: "It is best if she is left to cope with it first."
