Worker killed after being hit by steel bars on board a vessel at Jurong Port

SINGAPORE - A worker was killed on Sunday (Aug 14) night in an accident at Jurong Port Road, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in a media statement on Wednesday (Aug 18).

The worker was on board a vessel docked at Jurong Port Pte Ltd's premises. A bundle of steel bars was being lifted out of the cargo hold by the vessel's crane when the bars swung round and struck the worker, who was helping in the operation.

The accident happened at about 8.40pm and the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

MOM said that its Occupational Safety & Health Division was notified about five minutes after the accident and that the cause of the accident is under investigation.

In the meantime, the ministry has issued a stop-work order on all lifting operations on board the vessel where the accident occurred.
