SINGAPORE - The Manpower Ministry will review the existing Code of Practice on workplace safety and health risk management, said Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin on Friday.
Mr Tan said this will be done to reflect that a holistic approach should be taken for risk management, which should not be merely a "paper exercise", and that risks should be reduced at the source or mitigated with control measures.
Speaking at the annual Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards at Marina Bay Sands, he added that the new Code, along with a simplified risk management guide for workers, will be launched early next year.
Stressing that it is important for businesses to build a strong workplace safety and health culture, he said: "It is really about the culture. It needs to be ingrained into not just management, but...into the rank and file as well. Everyone's behaviour needs to be aligned towards the common goal of avoiding harm to people."
Mr Tan also pointed out that an integrated approach, which includes being mindful of employees' health conditions, should be adopted in managing workplace safety and health.
"Our ageing workforce will become more prone to work-related ill-health, which will impact on the safety of workers," he said. "There is a pressing need for employers to start looking into integrating employee well-being in its WSH approach."
