Man jailed for recording woman in shower with a spy camera

A man, who placed a spy camera inside a shampoo rack of a toilet to video record a fellow tenant bathing, was jailed for three weeks on Thursday.

Accounts executive Chan Chee Yoong, 42, a Malaysian and a Singapore permanent resident, admitted to intruding into the privacy of the then 24-year-old woman at a flat in Balestier on May 28, 2011. A magistrate's court heard that Chan had rented a room at the flat while the victim was renting a room which she shared with her boyfriend.

While in the shower, the victim spotted a black coloured device inside the shampoo rack. The woman, who had seen the device before, sensed something amiss and decided to take it back to her room to show to her boyfriend.

Just then, Chan came over and asked her for the device but she refused to hand it to him. A minor dispute ensued and the landlord was called in. Chan confessed that the device was actually a concealed video camera recording device, also known as a spy camera.

A total of three video clips showing the victim nude and showering were found in the memory card of the spy camera.

Copies of the videos were also found in his desktop computer and mobile phone. Chan could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined.
