Man jailed for molesting woman in his car after clubbing

A man who was supposed to take a woman home after a night out clubbing molested her at the backseat of his car.

Jeff Tan Jack Foo, 32, was sentenced to six months' jail and three strokes of the cane after he admitted groping the 24-year-old's breast twice at the carpark of Marina Barrage in Marina Garden Drive on May 6 last year.

The court heard that the victim, her friend who is also aged 24, and Tan had gone clubbing at St James Powerhouse the night before. When they decided to leave at about 2.30am, Tan declined to send the victim home at first. He told the friend that he had consumed some alcoholic drinks and was afraid that they might be a police roadblock along the way.

They then decided to drive to Marina Barrage to allow Tan to sober up before sending them home. The victim fell asleep in the car. When her friend left to go to the toilet, Tan went to the rear passenger seat and molested the victim.

She woke up when she felt his hand on her chest but did not know how to react as she was afraid that he might turn violent if she put up a struggle. She stirred her body and felt him withdraw his hand from underneath her bra. Moments later, she felt him groping her again.

She reported him to the police on May 29 last year. Tan, who will start his sentence on April 16, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or any of the combined punishments.
