Man investigated for making false report on lost items

Police are investigating a 26-year-old man for making a false police report on March 9 at the Chong Pang Neighbourhood Police Post.

The suspect alleged that an unknown man had picked up his dropped wallet in Gambas Avenue before running away. His wallet, he claimed, contained his work permit, debit and ATM cards, driving license and cash amounting to about $225.

Police conducted an inquiry and found many discrepancies. The suspect admitted in follow-up interviews that he had lodged a false report. The police in a statement on Thursday said they would take stern action against anyone giving false information, as these utilise police resources which could be put to use in crime fighting.

Anyone who is convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant can be jailed up to a year or fine up to $5,000 or both.
