Man caught red-handed for allegedly taking upskirt video on bus

A 25-year-old Chinese man was caught red-handed for allegedly taking an upskirt video of a woman while travelling on a SMRT bus along Clementi Ave 5.

The incident took place at about 4.50pm on Saturday. The suspect had allegedly placed his mobile phone under the skirt of a female passenger standing in front of him. His actions were spotted by Mr Sivagumar Subramaniam, an undergraduate, who was travelling on the same bus. Mr Sivagumar confronted the suspect after he alighted the bus and subsequently handed him over to the police.

Police said investigations are ongoing. If convicted of insulting the modesty of a woman, the suspect could be jailed for up to one year, or fined, or both.

Upskirt videos are classified under the law as "insulting a woman's modesty". Last year, there were 621 reports of insulting a woman's modesty, up from 598 in 2011 and 579 in 2010. In the most recent case, a former Land Transport Authority officer Kew Guozhi, 31, was jailed 15 months for taking at least 423 upskirt video recordings using a camera pen clipped to his shoe, last month.
