The Malaysian teacher who entered Singapore illegally last month now faces three charges after appearing in court for the first time on Wednesday.

Nurul Ruhana Ishak, a 27-year-old Kedah native, originally faced a single charge of criminal trespass, but two additional charges for failing to present her passport and failing to stop her vehicle upon arrival were read out in court.

The two new charges each carry a maximum sentence of six months and/or a fine. She was offered a $15,000 bail and is expected to appear in court again on March 4.

Nurul slipped pass immigration officers at the Woodlands checkpoint on Jan 17 by tailgating a car. Several missteps by border security and police officers led to her arrest only three days after, when she entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs compound without authorisation. She was later charged with trespassing and has been in remand at the Institute of Mental Health since.
