In the 1960s, Mr Koh Leng Kiat met Madam Meena Jaganathan, a widow with eight children. Their love blossomed and they wed, and went on to have four biological children.

When Mr Ranjan Jaganathan was 10, a coconut fell on his head and knocked him unconscious. His mother, Madam Meena Jaganathan, later told him that his Chinese stepfather, Mr Koh Leng Kiat, carried him all the way to hospital.
The man he and his seven siblings addressed as "uncle" also paid for his medication and took care of him.
