Little India shop owner charged with selling liquor without a valid licence

A second man was charged on Wednesday with selling liquor without a valid licence in Little India. Yeo Eng Hock, 59, owner of Yeo Buan Heng Liquor Shop in Chander Road, indicated that he would plead guilty to the offence committed on Dec 22 last year.

His shop falls within the designated area in Little India, where restrictions have been imposed on the sale and public consumption of liquor, in the aftermath of the Dec 8 riot. Liquor and convenience stores in the area holding retail and wholesale licences are allowed to sell takeaway alcohol, but only from 6am to 8pm on weekends, public holidays and their eve.

Yeo, who is unrepresented, faces a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted of the offence under the Customs Act. He will return to court on Jan 15.

Meanwhile, Prata City owner Tan Suan Lee, 44, is expected to plead guilty on Wednesday afternoon for selling liquor to customers without a licence at Jalan Besar on Dec 21.
