Workers' rights group Workfair Singapore has made recommendations to the Committee of Inquiry (COI) investigating the Dec 8 Little India riot, in a four-page statement on Friday.

These include recommendations that cabinet ministers not make "further pronouncements of their views" on the causes of the riot, in order to "safeguard the integrity" of the COI.

The group also requested that the committee's deliberations start after criminal proceedings end, "to ensure that there is no conflict of process or of evidence", and that the group asked for all proceedings of the COI to be open to members of the public and the media.

Given the "gravity of the incident", the group also requested Leader of the House and Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen to ensure that a full debate on the findings of the COI's report is held in Parliament.

Earlier this week, local rights group Maruah also urged officials not to jump to what it says could be premature conclusions on what caused the Little India riot. Its president Braema Mathi said that some leaders have already made assumptions, such as drunkenness being a possible cause.
