Two outlets and an individual were found to have breached the restrictions on sale and consumption of alcohol in Little India last weekend, the police said in a statement on Monday.

In the first case, police officers came across a man with a can of unopened beer along Chander Road at 12.46am on Dec 22. The man told the officers that he had purchased the can of beer from a shop along Chander Road. Preliminary investigations showed that the proprietor of the outlet is believed to have sold the beer during the stipulated hours when the restriction on sale of alcohol were still in force. The shop will have its licence suspended.

Liquor and convenience stores in the zone holding retail and wholesale licences were allowed to sell alcohol, but only from 6am until 8pm on weekends, eve of public holidays and on public holidays.

In the second incident which was reported on the same day at 12.50am, officers conducted a check at an eatery at Jalan Besar and found that it was serving alcohol. Further checks revealed that the eatery does not have a valid licence for the sale of liquor.

"Police view both incidents very seriously. The sale of liquor under these circumstances is a blatant disregard for the law and the measures announced under the restricted regime. We will take strong action against the parties involved," said the police statement.

"Police will be proceeding with a view to charge them in Court under Section 71(1) of the Customs Act, Cap 70, for selling intoxicating liquors without a valid licence. The police will also be suspending the licence of the shop along Chander Road shop until the conclusion of the court case," the statement added.

In addition to the two cases, a man was also found drinking alcohol over the weekend in the affected zone. He complied with a warning from the police to stop. He will be issued with a police advisory. Liquor licence holders in Little India can expect stringent compliance checks to continue, the statement added.
