Little India Riot: 24 suspects charged in court with rioting

A group of Indian nationals, arrested in connection with Sunday's riot in Little India, have been charged with rioting and ordered to be remanded for a week to facilitate further investigations.

The 24 men, aged between 22 and 40, were brought to court on Tuesday in three different police vans before appearing in the dock to have their charges read out to them.

They are Chinnathambi Malesan, 22; Chinnappa Prabakaran, 23; Singaravelu Vignesh, 23; Thiagarajan Sribalamurugan, 23; Karuppiah Thirunavukkarasu, 24; Periyaiah Ganesan, 24; Ravi Arun Vengatesh, 24; Rengasamy Muruganantham, 24; Anbarasan Vel Murugan, 25; Rajendran Mohan, 25; Thangaiya Selvakumar, 25; Mahalingam Thavamani, 26; Selvanathan Murugesan, 27; Arun Kaliamurthy, 28; Selvaraj Karikalan, 28; Bose Prabakar, 29; Chinnappa Govindarasu, 30; Ganesan Ashokkumar, 31; Krishnan Saravanan, 31; Chinnappa Vijayaragunatha Poopathi, 32; Ramalingam Sakthivel, 33; Alagappan Kathaiya, 36; Sathan Selvan, 39; and Mongan Anbalagan, 40.

A representative from the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme told the court it is helping to secure lawyers for all the accused persons. Separately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is working with Indian High Commissioner to facilitate legal representation for all the suspects involved in the case.
