The 26 China-assembled trains with hairline cracks are being rectified with better-quality parts cast in Japan, the authorities said.

The cracks did not pose a safety risk, so the issue was not made public when they were found three years ago, said Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan yesterday.

And while the trains had to be sent back to the manufacturer, this did not affect the North-South East-West Line's capacity, he said.
