SINGAPORE - Senior citizens now have an outdoor fitness area in a shopping mall for the first time.

Jurong Point Shopping Centre on Sunday launched an outdoor gym just for them.

The facility features specially designed fitness equipment to provide senior citizens with a safe and engaging work-out. The equipment have several functions, including making muscles more flexible, improving leg strength and balance, and massaging the waist and back.

Free and open to the public, the area is similar to fitness corners in housing estates. It spans an area of 240 sq metres, and was built at a cost of $150,000.

Madam Margaret Koh, who is in her 60s, was among those who attended the launch. She said: "The equipment are elderly-friendly, conveniently located in a mall and right next to the train station, which makes it easier for us to exercise and keep an active lifestyle."

The gym was officially launched by Mr Cedric Foo, Member of Parliament for the Pioneer Constituency.

Jurong Point, in launching the outdoor gym, also partnered with Young At Heart, an outreach programme for the elderly, and Pioneer Community Centre.
