Jubilee weekend activities start tonight: 6 places to go

Don't stay home this Jubilee weekend. Whether you are a fan of the arts or sports, there's an SG50 activity for you.

1. Botanic Gardens

A plaque declaring the Gardens a Unesco World Heritage site will be unveiled on Aug 7 at about 5pm. A carnival featuring batik painting and calligraphy demonstrations will also be held at the Bandstand and Orchid Plaza from Aug 7 to 9.

There will also be music performances by the T’ang Quartet, The Sam Willows and the Singapore Lyric Opera.

2. Gardens By The Bay

Award-winning landscape architect Damian Tang’s creations - made using - more than 8,000 orchids and other flowers are featured in an exhibition. From Tales to Legends: Discover Singapore Stories, in the Flower Dome. It ends on Sept 13. Enjoy a light-and sound show, Garden Rhapsody, in the evenings at the Supertrees, from Aug 6.

3. Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Check out one-hour demonstrations and music performances at the Esplanade Concert Hall. There are also art installations and music, dance and art performances.

Aug 6 to Aug 10; Esplanade Concert Hall Open House is on Aug 8, at 1pm, 3pm, 6.15pm and 8.15 pm.

4. Singapore Sports Hub

More than 20 free sports, entertainment and lifestyle activities will be featured at an SG50 carnival. Other activities at the OCBC Arena include human futsal, human bowling, K-Pop dance tutorials and basketball workshops.

The OCBC Aquatic Centre will feature activities like fishing games and children's pedal boats in the training pool while there will be water activities like canoeing and kayaking at the Water Sports Centre.

Aug 8 - Aug 9, 9am to 9pm.

5. Marina Barrage

Get into the Jubilee spirit at this mass picnic. There will be carnival stalls, roving magicians and caricaturists, and music performances by Singapore artists such as Daphne Khoo. A mobile cafe will sell picnic baskets.

Aug 7 - Aug 8, 8am to 12.30pm. 

Admission: Free. Register for the picnics at www.sg50picnics.sg before Sunday. 

6. Marina Bay Sands

Take part in the 4km-long Community Chest Heartstrings Walk, which starts at the Marina Bay Sands event plaza or attempt the vertical marathon at 57-storey Marina Bay Sands. There is also a food carnival at the Waterfront Promenade open space.

The walk and vertical marathon are on Aug 7. The walk is from 7am to 11.30am. The climb starts at 6am. The food carnival is from Aug 7 to Aug 9, 12pm to 10pm.
