Jobless man jailed nine months for slashing and hitting wife with table fan and flask

An unemployed man was jailed for nine months on Thursday for slashing his wife and hitting her with a table fan and a flask.

S I George Raj, 42, was fined a total of $2,000 for criminal trespass and breaching a personal protection order granted to his wife Ms Shivani Priyadarshini Dinesh Kumar Vellayappan, 32.

He admitted to four of six charges before District Judge Lim Tse Haw who said this was a particularly bad case of spousal abuse.

The court heard that Ms Shivani moved back to her maiden home in Yishun Ring Road as their marriage had broken down. She was granted a PPO in October 2011 due to instances of family violence against by her husband.

On Dec 15 last year Raj had been drinking alcohol when he decided to confront his wife at her family home over her earlier call to the police on an alleged breach of the PPO.

He brought along a stone and a knife.

He climbed up along the water pipe and forced open the window grills to get into the unit at Yishun Ring Road. He shouted repeatedly at his wife and threatened to slash her face.

Her brother tried to push him away to protect the victim who was holding on to her toddler son. Raj proceeded to slash her causing her to suffer superficial cuts on her face, left arm and ear.

Three days earlier he had also drunk alcohol before confronting the victim and shouting at her: "You watch out, I'll get back at you for all you have done''. He then hurled vulgarities at her and her family members.

On Feb 26 last year Raj returned to his Upper Thomson house drunk and assaulted the victim by punching her several times on her head, kicking her and pulling her hair. He also hit her on her head and body using a table fan and threw a flask at her.

Defence lawyer Ram Goswami pointed out that the victim had, in her letter to the prosecution, forgiven her husband, wished to save her marriage, and felt that he was truly remorseful.
