Mr S. Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry), has been appointed co-chairman of the Committee on the Future Economy (CFE) because of Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat's illness.

Mr Iswaran was the committee's deputy chairman, a position that will now be held by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

Both appointments will take effect immediately, a PMO statement said last night.

Mr Heng, the committee's chairman, suffered a stroke last Thursday and remains in hospital.

The CFE is tasked with charting the course of Singapore's future economy, including studying key areas crucial to sustaining economic growth and equipping workers with skills needed for the future.

Analysts said the new appointments will ensure the CFE's work continues "without many hiccups''.
