SINGAPORE - An advertisement by Ikea Singapore to promote late-night shopping has gone viral online.

Entitled Ikea Halloween, the 1.5-minute long clip was uploaded by the Swedish home furnishing company on Monday onto YouTube, and paid homage to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film The Shining.

Just like a key scene in the film where a little boy named Danny Torrance rides his tricycle along the deserted corridors of a hotel and encounters the ghosts of twin sisters, the advertisement shows a young boy riding a squeaky red tricycle around an Ikea showroom seemingly after operation hours.

As he does so, lamps flicker, a strange mist appears, and skeletons are seen eating at a cobwebbed dining table. Things reach a climax as Danny rounds a corner and is confronted by two people in bright blue dresses.

"Hello Danny, come pay with us. Come and pay with us Danny. Come pay with us," they deadpan. In The Shining, the ghosts' line goes: "Come and play with us, Danny."

Ikea Singapore further showed their sense of humour in a post after the clip was uploaded, saying: "Relax. This video is purely fictional. No customers have reported any weird sightings at our stores nor have we found any skeletons in our closets."

The clip has garnered close to 2.5 million views and more than 8,800 'Likes' as of 8am on Friday.
