Truck spill causes 5-hour jam on PIE

An accident on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) towards Changi Airport, before the Kallang Way exit, brought traffic to a crawl yesterday for at least five hours and caused a jam stretching back to Adam Road.

The accident involved a car and a tipper truck, which landed on its left side and spilled its load of sand onto the road. Police said they received a call about the accident at about 1.20pm.

There were no injuries.

Smoke from escalator didn't deter shoppers

Smoke rising from an escalator at Nex mall in Serangoon on Tuesday evening did not deter shoppers from using it.

An eyewitness said shoppers could be seen riding it even as the escalator, connecting the second and third floors, was emitting smoke. It was stopped and cordoned off when the smoke alarm sounded, and repairmen were sent to investigate and repair.

A faulty motor was the cause of the smoke, said a spokesman for the mall.

No one was injured and the incident is still under investigation.
