Teaching kids about green buildings

Children can learn about the importance of green buildings and eco-friendly living at the Build-it-Green Day Out this weekend at the Toa Payoh Hub Atrium.

From exploring the titular Glass House from local children's storybook The Adventures Of Greco and Beco: The Glass House to rotating a house to suit the orientation of the sun, interactive activities aim to teach children about the importance of an environmentally sustainable built environment.

The free event runs from 2pm to 8pm tomorrow, and 10am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday.

This year's highlight is a mock-up of the Glass House, where visitors can feel the effects of building with non-eco-friendly design features such as poor ventilation.

LTA wins US award for data-sharing service

For sharing data such as real-time bus arrival timings so third-party developers can come up with apps, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has received the City on a Cloud Innovation Leadership Award from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This is the first time an agency from a city outside the United States has clinched the award.

The award recognises LTA's "innovative and outstanding use of cloud-based solutions and tools" and was presented at the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC on Tuesday.

The LTA uses AWS to host DataMall@MyTransport.SG, a rich source of land transport datasets, which developers can tap for apps.

6 shortlisted for Jurong Lake tender

Six teams have been shortlisted to participate in the second stage of the tender to design the upcoming Jurong Lake Gardens (JLG) due to the "high-quality submissions" received for the project, the National Parks Board said yesterday.

They will undertake the concept design for JLG Central and East, and will also develop ideas to integrate the gardens with the concept design of JLG West and the surrounding area.

Billed as Singapore's new national gardens in the heartland, the 90ha JLG is envisioned to be a "people's garden", where landscaped spaces encourage families and the community to come together.
